Thanks for raising this Ken...I'd like to know more. Just this morning we were in the meeting of the Water Quality Monitoring Committee, which is the joint group set up to coordinate between the city, park board and watersheds. Council member Colvin Roy is the chair. We talked about milfoil and heard about a reportedly benign chemical treatment used elsewhere. This is also interesting. I'm very interested in other best practices from elsewhere...If anyone has info, please copy CM Colvin Roy and I...and, obviously Park Board members.....so we can see if these can be used.
It's clear that the current approach is not having a long term structural impact. I think it's very important to do it, or something, to continue the lakes' ability to be recreational amenities, but I think everyone is looking for a longer term strategy so please pass along ideas. Hello Minneapolis Folks, Eurasian Milfoil was a recent topic of discussion at a meeting I attended in White Bear Lake. White Bear Lake has had very good success combating this problem by using a much different technique then Minneapolis. White Bear Lake has a group of volunteer scuba divers that pull/weed the milfoil at its roots out of the bottom of the lake. Minneapolis uses combines to weed the top of the milfoil, which is a temporary, maintenances solution, while also damaging the lakes indigenous plants. Picking the milfoil at the roots helps to eliminate the milfoil at the source and also does less to negatively impact the lakes indigenous plants. The lakes indigenous plants become stronger and help to keep out the milfoil. I am suggesting Minneapolis should recruit volunteers to perform a study project on one of our lakes to see if this weeding technique maybe a better solution to reducing milfoil, while improving the indigenous plants. I look forward to peoples comments on this idea! Ken Bradley Corcoran Neighborhood --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Mail - 100MB free storage! REMINDERS: 1.
