Breakfast with Gary
Friday July 30, 2004
7:30 to 9 a.m. at Caf of the Americas, 3019 Minnehaha Ave S.

This month's Topic: Rental Application Fees

Is the affordable housing crises over? Despite increased vacancies, renters are still
subject to high fees when applying for an apartment. Sometimes renters pay hundreds of
dollars, and still can't find a place to live, making transitioning out of shelters
difficult. Council Member Gary Schiff and tenant advocates are proposing an ordinance
to limit rental application fees. The proposed ordinance would insure that renters are
given the criteria their application will be judged on; guarantee that renters are
notified of the reasons for rejection; limit application fees; and limit the number of
application fees that can be collected per unit. Staff and advocates from HOME Line
and the Jobs and Affordable Housing campaign will be on hand.

Breakfast with Gary is a monthly breakfast meeting for constituents hosted by 9th Ward
Minneapolis City Council Member Gary Schiff. Held from 7:30-9:00 a.m. on the final
Friday of the month (January through October) at the Caf of the Americas (3019
Minnehaha Avenue South), the Breakfast features people and issues that affect the 9th
Ward and the City of Minneapolis. The cost of breakfast is $5.
