Maybe the recent Strib editorial ( http://www.startribune.com/stories/561/4903909.html ) is correct that on-street parking is neither necessary nor sufficient for good "street life", but the tone was a little uppity. My gut says to trust our City officials over county ones, but maybe the City has fixated a bit too much on on-street parking...

Kudos to the Mayor, Council member Niziolek and others for trying to making good urban design a priority.

One bit from the editorial that needs rebutting:

"The city's plan fails on two fronts. First, the curbside parking it proposes to "save" won't be available during the hours that businesses need it most: the morning, afternoon and midday peaks. During those times, parking would be banned to allow a third and fourth lane of through traffic. So what's the point?"

Many people do shop and use curbside parking during non-rush hours, people who don't work 9-5 jobs, people who do work 9-5 but shop in the evening.. surely more than enough for those spaces to "have a point"

Viewing "Arterials" as nothing but automotive sewers to someplace else has devastated America's cities. Let's hope the county doesn't plumb Lake street.
