TOny Sclloon says...

There is a special meeting of the Commissioners this Wednesday forced by three commissioners. Is the intent of the meeting to continue the Personal attacks on Mr. Gurban in order to force him not to apply?

Annie says:
This was not my intent for asking for a meeting with 4 agenda items. These 4 items have been items that are really unfinished business items of the Board but all have been dangling out there - some even for several years- with what I thought was "No Action at this time". All of a sudden there are plans, money figures being tossed about, an organizational restrucaturing gong on tht has not been presented to the Board, possible deals being made about uses of our Historic Houses, lots and lots of action...

Now I don't mind lots of action and it often cycles that way before an election year so Commisiones have "notches" to put on their belt of things accomplished during their term...
However, in this case I believe it has more to do with the fact that we have again slipped into lots of "backroom" politics going on without the full Board knowing about the details on these 4 items. As one who sits in the 4 person minority it becomes even more obvious.

Yes, I did also request that we begin to get reports under an item called "Reports of officers" from the Supt. because I have yet to hear many words out of the Supt's mouth at meetings (which for some may seem ok - David Fisher didn't talk much in the actual meeting either). But we have heard nothing either privately or publicly about what Mr. Gurban is working on.

And I hope the citizens of Minneapolis know me better than knowing that I would not say "so and so" cannot apply. I have been pushing hard for it not necessarily to be a Parks & Rec background as a top priority for the choice but someone with well rounded knowledge in many areas. And I encourage women and people of color to apply also.

Anyway, basically I just wanted updates and to be told of what is going on these days. I do fear we have become very lax in communication - internally and externally. That is usually the purpose of a Committee of the Whole meeting - to discuss items more openly than in the formal Board or committee meeting so we can set some direction and steps to move forward.

I haven't quite figured out how all this has gotten so personal. I know there are citizens out there who are upset, want answers, and think we are in bad shape so are calling "for heads to roll". I even think some of the citizens are over the edge in their zealousness to "protect the parks". However, I am not part of that group and hope that we just have a fair, open process in choosing a "great" Superintendent for the future of the City and our Parks.
