I was surprised by the discussions of the Superintendent of the Park Board. I noticed the letter from Lisa McDonald read by Commissioner Vivian Mason. The central point of the letter attempts to exclude from consideration the present Acting Superintendent. Several speakers agreed with the letter.

Interesting, Nine months ago the selection process was criticized for hiring Mr. Gurban when he did not apply during the process. Now an attempt is being made to force him not to apply. Nine months ago the hiring of Gurban was criticized that the process was violated. Yet, what kind of process for hiring a Superintendent begins by excluding and threatening potential candidates for the office!

What threat? Get a grip on your hyperbole, Mr. Scallon. Nobody is forcing him to not apply, either. Instead, the public is telling the Board that they do not want him considered.

There is nothing wrong with excluding clearly undesirable people from an employment search. That's how most hiring is done. Maybe in your world you hire people based on political favors rather than what they know. That's not how we want it done.

Gurban is flat-out not the kind of superintendent we need for our parks. His irrational, short-tempered, nasty public behavior towards citizens of this city is one reason. His lack of experience with any organization remotely the size of this park system is another. His unchecked and nonetheless "puff" resume is full of holes and questions.

His ethical lapses at his previous employer is one good reason to not hire him for any job at the Park Board, and his lawsuit against his previous employer is just icing on the cake. It would be hard to find a worse candidate than Gurban.

Remember, last year several very qualified candidates suddenly withdrew from consideration. I can see why they withdrew. The Park Board needs to conduct themselves in a more professional manner to make the selection process work.

There you go again, confusing the Park Board commissioners with the public as whole. You made this same blatant mistake in your last pitiful postings on the Park Board. What detail about the Park Board commissioners sitting quietly while the public expresses its view at a public hearing do you not understand? What detail of that hearing gives you any grounds whatsoever to criticize any commissioner as being unprofessional?

This is your same bogus argument rehashed. You have no basis for that accusation.

The facts are these. The public does not want Mr. Gurban as superintendent. The commissioners have conducted themselves in a professional manner.

You simply don't like not getting your way of favoritism at the public trough.

There is a special meeting of the Commissioners this Wednesday forced by three commissioners. Is the intent of the meeting to continue the Personal attacks on Mr. Gurban in order to force him not to apply?

Actually the main issues to be discussed at the meeting had little to do with the Superintendent search.

I think some reasonable heads should take over the process. I hope the President and Vice President of the Park Board will calm the factionalism on the Board. Personal attacks and innuendoes against the Superintendent are inappropriate and taint the process.

Reasonable heads are standing by. All we need is for Bob Fine, Walt Dziedzic and Jon Gurban to resign, and those reasonable people take their place, and the factionalism will be taken care of -- along with a host of other problems that the cronyism and nepotism are causing.
