Thanks, Shawn, for posting about the PEACE Ball. I can fill in some more
details about the event itself.

This unique community-building event will feature appetizers and drinks from
fine Twin Cities restaurants, music and dancing, local artistic expressions,
and the opportunity to meet others from a variety of backgrounds ready to
work toward local peace.

Food and drinks will be provided by Pizza Luce, the Modern Cafe, West Indies
Sould Cafe, the Bean Scene, and Dunn Bros.

We will hear blues and jazz from Wayne McFarlane, with vocals from Telesea
Everett. The second half of the night will have dancing with music played
by DJ Walter Q-Bear from KMOJ.

We will have a display from photographer Bill Cottman and an art show
sponsored by the California Building Gallery with work depicting local
peace.

The program at the event will feature comments by the co-hosts, as well as
spoken word from local artists the Unknown Prophets and Poetic Black Fusion.

We hope participants will leave the event feeling inspired to work within
their neighborhoods, organizations, congregations, work places, and at the
street-level to prevent local violence. Tickets for the event are at two
donation levels - $40 and $100 - and are available for purchase online:

Subject: [Mpls] PEACE BALL 2004 EVENT

A BALL LIKE NO OTHER

Saturday, September 18, 2004 - 7:30 pm until late
Historic Grain Belt Brewery Bottling House,
 79 - Thirteenth Ave. N.E., Minneapolis

Along with a host of other partners, the PEACE Ball
is brought to you by co-hosts:
Council Member Don Samuels & Sondra Hollinger Samuels,
Mayor R.T. Rybak & Megan O'Hara,
Police Chief William McManus and Lourdes McManus

THE CHALLENGE

At first glance, the problem seems too large, too intractable.
Minneapolis is home to some of the greatest racial disparities
in the country.

*African Americans are imprisoned at 20 times the rate of Caucasians
*In 2000, 44% of all African American Hennepin County men had been arrested
and booked
*One out of every 9 Jordan Neighborhood residents is currently under court
supervision

But there is reason to be hopeful. The PEACE Foundation
is not relying on traditional models and resources to
create change. Instead of adopting a charity-based or
social service model, the foundation is launching a
grassroots movement capable of harnessing the power
of individuals, employers, congregations, institutions,
and organizations
