Shawn Marie wrote: I've been quiet for a long while,. but I can't watch this anymore. As a mother of a seven-year-old in a public school I will tell anyone and everyone that ALL of it matters. Math, reading, the arts - ALL of it is necessary. It is ridiculous that there would even be such a debate. Shame on you.
Mark Anderson responds: Sure I feel really ashamed because I think the number one goal of the school system should be to get kids to read and add. And you are outraged at the idea of dropping the arts in school because, after all, your daughter likes them. The World has turned upside down. Shawn Marie again: Forgive me, but I just don't understand this debate. We're all on the same side, correct? Mark Anderson: I thought we were all on the same side, but you are putting doubt in my mind. I always thought that it was important to lay out priorities for all public spending, because we never have as much as we'd like. I also believe that to solve the problem of illiteracy and innumeracy in our schools that we need to focus on the problem. Some may feel that it is ridiculous to debate some subjects. I think the lack of debate on the key issues is the main problem. We all want more money, but if it's not there, we need to decide how to spend what we have. Mark V Anderson Bancroft REMINDERS: 1.
