Phyllis Kahn is guilty of obstructing democracy, pure and simple. First she uses the legal system to obstruct democracy in her attempt to overturn the city council elections of 2001. Then this summer she resorts to childish and illegal means of obstructing democracy by lifting flyers distributed by an opposing political party.
By not condemning her most recent attempts at obstructing democracy, the inept leaders of the DFL Party are risking alienating more of their base. And if they think Republicans in the State House aren't going to pursue an ethics violation hearing after she's re-elected then they're more out of touch than I thought they were. It's rather distressing to see another DFLer, State Senator Berglin, go after parents of taggers with a vengeance when many of them live below the poverty level, yet she has nothing to say about her colleague's bad behavior. For the good of her own party, Kahn ought to have the good sense to resign. Furthermore, her fellow DFLers ought to have the integrity to condemn her actions given that so many of them are quick to legislate heavy penalties against inner city youth and their families. ----------- Peter Schmitz Downtown Saint Paul ________________________________________________________________ Get your name as your email address.
