Miller did not "drop off the school board." She didn't seek reelection to the school board. And her husband's need of a kidney transplant didn't stop Sandra Miller from trying to transplant herself into the 8th ward city council seat in 2001. Miller placed third in the primary. The top 2 got a spot on the ballot in the general election.Sandra and Butch Miller were the leadership of Green Central Weed & Seed prior to the last city council election. During their leadership Weed & Seed was constantly embroiled in controversy and meetings were long fights with name calling, shouting, outrageous insults, crying, and general misery. This became so divisive that Weed & Seed partners and community people refused to attend meetings and foundations which stood ready to support W&S efforts withdrew. W&S status was within an inch of being withdrawn by both the state and feds and remained tentative for three years, I think (an excruciatingly long time at any event) while we created a work plan, straightened out the books, initiated and tracked programming, and tried desperately to bring community people back to the table. The principle bones of contention during the Millers leadership were that the leadership refused to create a work plan so that W&S could track whether initiatives were effective, that the leadership refused to attend to the paper work properly, and that they were creating problems for the neighborhood, not solving them.
After the changeover to new leadership, it was very tricky to trace how money was spent, how much remained, and whether the work done had improved the situation at all. After Sandra and Butch departed, we worked very hard to resuscitate W&S. It took over a year to straighten out the books, create a reasonable work plan, and pay off any unpaid debts. Since people hired to perform tasks for the organization had not been paid for work done, a check was sent to Sandra Miller with instructions to pay off workers left hanging. The check was cashed, but the workers were not paid. Those contract workers returned to W&S saying Mrs. Miller refused to pay them claiming they should get their money from W&S. Unpaid workers asked the revived W&S group for their money.
