Listers-
This concert was fabulous. This was 40s music, from the big band era some of these musicians having played and sang with the great ones like Duke Ellington. Some of you may remember some of them Percy Hughes, tenor sax and vocals; James "Cornbread" Harris, keyboards, Irv Williams, tenor sax; Ollie Lyle, bass; Dick LaVay, drums; Loren Walstad, electric guitar; Jimmy Hamilton, piano; Dick Mayes, vocals; and Doris Hines, vocals. Irv Williams clocked in at 85 years of age, Mrs. Hines at 81, some youngsters in their sixties.
But it was smooth, it was mellow, and they played some terrific golden oldies: Duke Ellington's Satin Doll which Percy sang. I love that song. Dick Mayes sang That's Why the Lady is a Tramp. I was waiting for him to lose it on the very last note which is high, long, and in a minor key, but he nailed it without a wobble. So lovely.
These are definitely some very cool, kewl, hep musicians from the sophisticated era of the big bands. They allowed as how they would be willing to play other libraries. So, go to your local library and ask that they bring in the Concert of Legends. They have CDs too.
They played Sophisticated Lady. Can you imagine? I was in heaven.
