I only eat there for breakfasts, but I find the Bridgeman's between 46th and Minnehaha Park east of Hiawatha (south end of the shopping center) to have a great breakfast.
Their special hash browns with cheese, onions and green peppers are fabulous. That's all you really need, come to think of it. How they stayed alive during the construction of the tunnel, I can't imagine, but they're still there and really worth a visit. I noticed the other day that they have the totem pole for the motel that used to be at that location. Give them enough business, and I would expect that you would see it reinstalled! They've got some kind of agreement for marketing and menus with Embers, so you can find some Embers products on their menu, too. Embers, now there's a chain that should have succeeded. That had a monopoly for a while on great Food with 24 availability. . I remember in the early 60s when the Toddle House (ugh) on Tenth Ave. & University SE was the only place in town for those used to doing "all-nighters." Then the Embers opened. I remember going to one near the City Hall, on maybe Second or Fourth Ave S., about Fourth St. A motel, now long gone, was on the same block. We became Instant habitues of the Embers. I still dream of the old Emburger Royal. But they seem to have gone downhill. Or maybe my tastes have changed. Can't take grease like I used to. The tiny Mei Inn Chinese restaurant at 42nd and Bloomington is also worth a visit. Under new ownership. Somebody has knocked the Chatterbox on 35th street as not being tony enough, but I like their extremely varied menu. I'll second Fat Lorenzo's for some of the best pizza in town.
