It is not surprising that some schools avoided being closed while others did not . I've been reminded by those paying attention to school matters for much longer than I that it is also not surprising that decisions of this magnitude and import for the future are being made without financial or educational justification. The proposed school closings are not likely to increase student achievement, not likely to close the achievement gap, not likely to attract more families to the district, not likely to fix the imbalance of teacher assignment, and not even likely to save money.
In fact, the closings might make all of the above even worse.
So, tell me again, why are the schools being closed? Why is it so important to close schools now? What's the worst that could happen, if say, two or three schools were closed next year, and we assessed how those closings affected all various areas of concern that appropriately should be measured?
