Though I am one for agreeing with the 2% increase in actual wages I know that many city employees have the same health insurance as the MPRB (union ties). The plan that was negotiated last year for all included a provision for a maximum cost increase by the company of 18%. I'm sure we are all shocked that the insurance cost was raised the maximum 18%. This is probably why the increases in the employee areas are so high. I doubt the increase in cost to the city can be avoided as it is in the union contracts. I can not say enough to everyone that health care costs are a pressing issue for not only the city but for the county, state, country, employees and employers. Nationally, locally someone needs to start the ball rolling to fix this. No budgets will be able to balance with double digit increases like this every year. The previous plan would have had a substantially higher increase per Don Sigglekow of the MPRB when this came up at one of their meetings. Who would guess we would be saying "Thank goodness only an 18% increase."
