Our friends at the Minnesota Tenants' Union are calling for a rally tomorrow
at the corporate headquarters of CenterPoint Energy (formerly Minnegasco) in
downtown Minneapolis, 800 Lasalle Avenue. The rally is in response to a
state investigation into CenterPoint's apparent practice of demanding full
payment of past utility bills before agreeing to restore heat in a
customer's home, without inquiring about or advising the customer of the
Cold Weather Rule and the right of a low-income customer to reconnection if
they agree to pay 10 percent of their income toward utilities.

Minnesota's Public Utilities Commission is now investigating CenterPoint's
practice and whether CenterPoint has violated state law.

Because of the investigation, CenterPoint has agreed to restore heat
immediately to about 300 affected customers, but claims that it must hear
from those customers first to arrange for reconnection.

If you know of someone whose heat has been shut off by CenterPoint, that
person should call the Public Utilities Commission immediately at (651)
296-0406.

More information about this issue, the MTU's rally, and about Minnesota's
Cold Weather Rule is now online on our website at:
