I don't think you mean Boom Island Park, which has been fully developed and is a
heavily used regional park. Putting a football stadium there would be as
unwise as putting one on the Island.
What I think you're referring to is known as the BFNelson site, the undeveloped
area adjacent and downstream of Boom Island Park.
We did talk to DeLaSalle about this and there IS more room over there.
DeLaSalle believes, rightly, that there may be environmental issues on the BF
Nelson site. Although probably the cheapest and best way to clean up that land
is to add a foot of topsoil and use it for recreational purposes.
So now Steve Nelson will throw in his two cents worth--
I agree with Emily that the Island site is too small for what is proposed and would greatly hamper traffic flow in an area that has potential traffic problems already.
Why not consider an athletic field between the new Park Board headquarters and the Lowry bridge which offers more space and is currently being reviewed for possible uses. Or between the Lowry Bridge and Camden Bridge.
Either area will no doubt have cleanup issues but it is not open space that the community is currently using and parking could be located away from the river. As I understand it, most of that land is currently owned by the city. Whether it holds title from the days when folks envisioned an active upper river harbor for barge traffic or was acquired for development of West River Rd projects, I don't know.
It's not adjacent to De LaSalle but neither is the field that North High uses.
Just an idea...........
