Tamir.. > There is the other part of this equation. Parents are just as responsible for their child's education as the schools. The "alarming" graduation rate? School can only do so much, parents need to make sure the homework gets done, and when necessary, get on their kid's case about about putting the work in to school. This is true no matter what school a student attends. > > Ultimately, even then, schools and parents can only give the tools, encouragement, focus and love...the tools to succeed. It's up to the students to use them well.
So true...parents need to step up to the plate with support for education...I believe a lot of the dropout is due to family and environment more than schooling. The education and opportunity is there if the child chooses to embrace it. I believe they do... if taught how to read early so they can keep up in class which should be the parents responsiblity before K. There comes a time, if the child does not have strong parental support along with low reading and learning skills, they will slip into a mode of... how fast can I get outta here! Is this the schools fault? >From what I have seen, we have some great schools...thank goodness some were not closed last year as planned such as Sanford. It will take time to get the restructuring and programs done as they should be but for some reason I now have *some* faith it will be done with children in mind and not the bottom line. dorie gallagher nokomis REMINDERS: 1.
