Barb and list, Why is a city council candidate under any particular obligation to announce his or her candidacy before the filing deadline? Why is this so "ridiculous?" I mean it isn't like the election is next week or anything. In many countries the whole election process, even at the national level, takes place over just a few weeks, not two years. Dean was, after all, redistricting out of Ward 6 shortly after his election meaning that he has a difficult choice if he want to continue to serve the city. I think you are throwing the term "carpetbagger" around a little too loosely. Do you think that the proper way to behave for someone who has been victimized by a meanspirited backroom deal that redistricted them out of the ward they have called home for many years is that they should just fold their cards and withdraw from civic life? In the last third ward special election there were certainly a couple of candidates who established temporary residences in the third ward and then somehow disappeared after they lost the primary. They were referred to as "carpetbaggers" by some. But this is a very different situation. Dean is a sitting council member who gave up his own small business to serve Minneapolis and he would like to continue to do so. This situation is certainly one he did not seek and in fact tried hard to avoid through the legal process. It is just one of the very unfortunate results of the 2001-2 redistricting process, another one of course being that our two African-American council members now have to run against each other. I'm sure that when Dean announces what he is going to do there will still be plenty of time before the election for a good campaign to take place, I doubt anyone will feel that it all happened too quickly. Quite frankly I am getting rather tired of the shell game Dean Zimmermann is playing with just about everyone regarding where he will land as a candidate if at all. I have heard he is running in 6 then 9 then 8 then 3 then 6 again. I have also heard he may not run at all. Craig, I hope your facts are straight because as recent as yesterday he was closing on a house in the 6th ward and would be running in there. That news came directly from a council member who he allegedly told about it. So, I will beg the question once and for all. Dean are you going to run in 9, 8, 3, 6 or at all? At this point it really doesn't matter to me. If he was passionate about his constituency in 6 it would be evident and that certainly hasn't been the case. He already said publicly in the observer I believe or was it the pulse that he doesn't want to run against Robert Lilligren because he thinks he is doing a good job. Well, that should pretty much seal his fate in 6. This jockeying to see what would be the best ward to carpetbag in is simply ridiculous. The indecision isn't going to be considered a good quality to any constituent base. Barb Lickness Whittier Ward 6
