The issues that Tony is bringing up about charter schools and their difficulties all seem to stem from the fact that MSP has control over the gym space and the dollars for school policing and they are NOT SHARING. I can see his point, and maybe it is something he should take up with the state legislature. They are the body that created the rules for the Charter Schools and like any NEW THING need revision along the way. I'm sure that NO ONE wants to endanger any children and that ALL would like to see fair access to park facilities. I myself was shocked to see that when the kids were home over the holidays there was no open gym time at Logan Park because of floor maintenance.

But as to sweeping issues like OPEN TIME access and the Neiman Complex under the rug to concentrate on just the Charter School issues is no solution. If the Neiman complex which is part of the enterprise division is running at an operating loss of $75,000 a year that is taking money from regular park operations like wading pools, forestry (the tree guys) and even staff at the rec centers it should be dealt with. And just how much money is being transfered from the enterprise division into the O and M budget from all these so called "money making schemes"? Are any other of the "enterprises" losing money??? How would we know, no one is talking, especially not the commissioner for the area including the Neiman complex.

And just how will we be able to communicate these issues to not only our park commissioners but the public at large if not during OPEN TIME and on cable TV. Are you suggesting I get on the phone and call the whole city? Thank goodness for forums like this that allow me to reach a large number of people at once. The issues of declining resources are making it necessary to overturn every rock where money might be available, but if the rock is covering a money eating monster shouldn't we get rid of it rather than feeding it our scarce resources???

And by the way Tony, your comments about the skatepark got me interested and you are right. Marie Hauser did not vote for the project that has the $2.5 million in liens against it. Commissioner Berry Graves abstained from voting and all the other commissioners in office at the time including Commissioner Bob Fine did vote for it. Commissioner Berry Graves had suggested postponing the vote until the contracts could be reviewed better. In hind sight she was right on the ball.

I suppose if they settle these liens that means the money will come from the self-insurance fund and next years budget will have to fill that hole as well as coming up with another $2.5 million to fight Dutch Elm etc... as per the Tree Commission recommendations.

So I hope you will understand when I keep posting about the MPRB and issues other than the Charter Schools because I am a big picture thinker and the more details the better.
