While it's handy for the bevy of candidates and the party officers responsible for locating precinct caucuses to place them in a single location in a given ward, as has in fact happened in several wards, that sometimes generates transportation and other logistical difficulties for many people who don't have cars, babysitters, first-shift jobs, and the like.
For example, the Somali elders who are American citizens who were in line outside the Brian Coyle polling station at 6:00 am last November 4, will find their way to Anne Sullivan School at the south end of the 2nd Ward come March 1 with the help of their friends. Ditto the folks at my old stomping grounds, Charles Horn Terrace at 115 W. 31st St., who won't be having their caucus in the congregate dining room where 60 folks attended last winter. With the help of their friends, these interested worthies will be finding their way to Jefferson School at 26th and Hennepin. This isn't such a bad thing. We all get to know one another better whether it's a meeting inside the precinct or at a central location. Having the whole ball of wax on a Saturday, however, is asking a lot of the working folks who normally scurry around town running errands on Saturday. Or parents with young children, or old folks who can't tolerate marathon engagements. Democracy is messy and inconvenient and our local pride and joy.
