RE: reference to difficulties with STrib online... the intrusive junk associated with required registration, etc.
I unsubscribed from the online STrib over a year ago just because of all the overly intrusive junk mail-related issues associated with registered membership. I get my hard-copy every day and the hassle of online registration just wasn't worth it to me. Much of the local news is reported here a week before the papers pick it up anyway. And, the SW Journal's excellent, in-depth coverage of many relevant city issues can't be beat. Add the Skyway News, City Business, City Pages, the Minneapolis Observer, the renowned Spokesman-Recorder, and the many other fine neighborhood news outlets-- it's down right hard to keep up with everything going on in this town. And, many of these others w/ online editions avoid the onerous registration requirements (read associated junk) that comes with STrib online. I don't experience junk hassles associated with free online registration to the NY Times, so NYT is a viable free alternate source of online national news for me. The online WSJ isn't free, but it's excellent and I don't experience any associated online junk problems as a result of my paid registration there (something to be said for paid online subscriptions, I guess). I'm sure there are many other free online news alternatives as well that avoid excessive junk associated with registration... or just avoid registration all together. Granted, there are many issues (like net revenues) to deal with under various business models. But in the end, there is only so much of this stuff you can read every day or several times a week-- time remains the great limiting factor for us readers. Now, if I was to give up my hard-copy subscription to the STrib, would I reconsider online registration? That's what some of the STrib management get paid big bucks to ponder. Net revenue trends, and associated variables, can be telling in a competitive marketplace. In the meantime, I'm a happy hard-copy subscriber and I hope this diatribe doesn't influence STrib endorsements this fall. Just take it as good customer feedback!
