Perhaps we need to do away with the old model of downtown altogether.
Why shouldn't more people who live in the 'burbs also work and shop in the 'burbs?
Why not more folks in Minneapolis work and shop in Minneapolis -- and in neighborhoods?
The current model is not only unsustainable, but only enriches a few at great cost to the many.
Why does everyone have to waste so much time and energy just driving around all day? Are there better ways to use that time and energy?
Why is our transportation system set up the way it is? Who benefits most, and who pays the most?
Does everyone assume that we will be able to continue with our present paradigm? Will energy supplies allow this? Will environmental impacts (local as well as global) allow this? Will the geopolitical consequences of our current transportation and urban design models allow us to continue the way we are? How many of our children will be seduced or manipulated -- or drafted -- to kill and die for our present way of doing things?
Another thread on this list has to do with education in Minneapolis Public Schools. I want to point out that when I talk to young people, they know damn well what is going on, They are being screwed by the older generation. We are burning through precious resources and destroying the environment and killing poor, dark-skinned people all over the planet to sustain our self-indulgent, self-righteous and very violent way of life. Our transportation system is at the heart of this.
Every kid in school or on the street knows that they are being screwed over by the adults who are supposedly there to nurture them. They are learning exactly what we are teaching them by the way we live.
