At heart, I am against putting cameras on the general public and more for turning them on government. I think in the long run we will see "Little Brother" (you and me) benefiting from all this modern technology. The Minneapolis Issues List is a great example of this. We are far better informed thanks to this forum. Having the Minneapolis codes available online has exposed a few shady deals. With Hennepin County property tax info available online we can better ensure our taxes are equitable.

But these red light cameras, I am troubled by our willingness to fine a person for something that can't be proven. Who was driving the car? Let me propose this: three strikes on a vehicle and you're out. Two warning letters, then a stiff fine, and this should not be a moving violation. If this is a behavior problem the person is very likely doing it often and they will be tagged shortly. If it's an issue of someone else driving the car, the owner will be alerted to the situation and made responsible.

Years ago, I remember hearing about "pay at the pump insurance" having been considered in California. The story was that the proposal was shot down thanks to the lobbying efforts of the insurance industry. This is one of those brilliant ideas that makes way too much sense. Another benefactor of this plan would be the owners of multiple vehicles. I sold my beloved MG partly because of insurance costs. Motorcycle owners would benefit too.
