The more knowledgeable of the members of this forum are well aware that Minneapolis owes the proliferation of traffic lights and "No Right Turn on Red" signs to its City Council, who, in days of yore, not able to think of reasons that they should get re-elected, decided on a "You Want It? You Got It!" policy with respect to traffic controls.
Finally, even they realized it was getting ridiculous and they passed a policy stating that only the Traffic Engineer could approve such controls. The Council then went on to other mischief. Well, it was mildly amusing sitting at stop lights when gas was 35 cents or 90 cents or a buck and a quarter a gallon. But I just spied a $2.12 a gallon sign this morning and I'm now wondering if one of the mathematicians among us might be able to figure out how much money/fuel is being wasted by all these traffic controls in locations where they are not needed. Maybe the City Council can save us a little tax money (in terms of electrical consumption and maintenance) and real money (in terms of gasoline consumption) by removing some of the controls that have grown up over the years.
