Not having read everything about Nicollet Island Field here is my way of looking at this. I did grow up in Golden Valley and Graduated from Robbinsdale Senior High on 36th Av n.
At that time the district had Three High Schools and only ONE FOOTBALL/SOCCER/TRACK. For students to travel to games or meets was a regular occurrence. This also meant scheduling Graduation so each school had a specific night, and again bussing to the Field. If this is being made to seem like it's something only happening because this is the inner city its' not. Hopkins Field is in Downtown and the High school is on Cedar Lake RD. North high's field is blocks away from the school. and enjoy the Old Houses. I am one of the people who likes to go to the Island and ride around and Traveling to a Field is NOT uncommon.
