First, the shop had to move a water cooler, the kind with a five gallon jug on the top, to an area out of the reach of the public. The gestapo indicated that the smoking ban required that. Then, as the cigar shop also offered candy bars, and mints, (Snickers and some breath mints, for example) for sale, it was told to stop selling the candy. Now, all of you folks who are celebrating the ban, should start taking a close look at the law that was passed. As this example shows, it is absurd. First, of course, is the fact that it is based on phony science. Second hand smoke doesn't do the stuff it is supposed to do. Second is the fact that Radon causes more cancer; have you tested your restaurant yet? Shouldn't a recent radon test be posted in the entry on every public asset? The most disturbing aspect of this is that our city council wrote this bill, debated it and passed it while extolling its virtue. We can mark the decline of Minneapolis as a city of the first order from the day this ban was put in place. I know of one meeting that has moved from a Minneapolis restaurant to the Vintage on Grand. That will be standard as St. Paul will just be more fun to go to. Now the restaurant employees in Minneapolis will be running for jobs in St. Paul, as was mentioned on one post on the Forum.
Before I get all sorts of flaming e-mail, explain why the water cooler had to be put out of reach of the public. Could it be that our city council is afraid that someone may drown? Also, as to the candy, it causes tooth decay, and obesity, and can lead to heart disease and diabetes, is that our city council's next target? It's possible, and there is actually scientific evidence to support a candy ban.
