After someone debunked the rape is about power not sex argument, we somehow went back to social constructionist remedies for the rape problem (teach men to respect women, improve the social realm of relationships between the sexes, etc). While this is important, I think most men who rape are beyond the reach of such noble aspirations.

Rape is a crime of opportunity, and the same sorts of practical remedies for other crimes such as assault, robbery and larceny apply to rape. Things like proper lighting.. I recently reported several alley-light outages to Xcel on the blocks near me. One alley had all four of its lights out. Now it has to be the brightest in the city.

We need to develop more Jane Jacobs neighborhoods, where the "eyes on the street" police themselves to a certain extent. And we need more real police presence and visibility, including officers walking a beat now and then, where appropriate. I believe there are benefits to having people actually be able to interact with the officers... The policing downtown at night seems more than adequate right now. Whenever I go out downtown I see groups of as many as 4-5 officers standing around talking. Maybe they need to spread out and cover areas that need it more. But I suppose we do have to keep the party scene safe and the liquor tax revenue flowing...
