I can't lurk on this any longer -- I too am very uncomfortable with people acting like the community college system is inferior. The community colleges provide an extremely valuable education for many many students. Some transfer to a four year institution, some use their education to get jobs they want. To say that this is "inferior" is elitist. People have different needs and wants.
Our dear state, which used to support education as valuable and a high priority, has instituted devastating cuts to all the schools -- K on up. It's disgusting and sad. What bothers me about eliminating GC is that the U is a major institution in this state, and we are talking about making changes that we KNOW will result in reducing the percentage of students of color and poorer students. How can we as an ethical society do that? Knowing that our society is permeated with systemic racism and classism due to a variety of forces -- how can we deliberately and knowingly continue to reinforce inequality in our major institutions? It's very upsetting. If an employer makes a reduction of its workforce and that results in a significant drop in the percentage of a "protected class" -- African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, women, people over age 50 -- then the employer has to prove that they are NOT discriminating against that group of people or it is assumed that they are.
