I had made hasty comments earlier about being in favor of competition in regards to the Comcast cable situation. I now regret not investigating the matter thoroughly enough. Discovering that Comcast may be taking over my cable service is disheartening. My number one complaint about Time Warner's otherwise exemplary service is the price. As I now understand, Comcast, which offers a lower quality service aims to charge even more! Ugh! I don't even think anything can be done, except roll over and accept it, or drop my service.
If memory serves, when cable TV first came to Minneapolis (Roger's, I believe), an agreement was hashed out to allow a monopoly for a set number of years (10?) to allow the company laying all the cable to recoup costs. After the predetermined period, the cables laid were mandated to remain in place. No installed cables could be removed, and competition was SUPPOSED to be opened up. What ever happened to that plan? What happened to that agreement? Sure enough we have satellite service as competition, but with video on demand, satellite doesn't hold a candle to cable anymore. Why in God's name can we have 10 phone companies to pick from , but only one cable company? While I'm ranting on the subject of telecom, the city investing in Wi-Fi is a terrible idea. The technology changes almost daily. Leave it to commercial ventures, or we'll end up spending gobs of our tax dollars on a worthless dinosaur.
