Robert Schmid writes:
I am deeply disappointed in Mr. Terril and Councilman Samuels. They should both be ashamed of themselves.
Dennis Plante Responds:
Don't be too terribly dissappointed. I do not understand where the conclusion by Booker is being drawn that the reason Council Memeber Samuels is supportive (of this) so that the gang members can be prosecuted under the Patriot Act.
Don's biggest fault (in my opinion anyway) is that he cares very deeply about ALL people. Not just white people, or black people, or Asian people. But ALL people. That sometimes gets him into trouble with very distinct and specific interest groups. In fact, he is regular fodder for some of the local medias because of it. At least he's willing to go on record (no, take the lead) as saying that the existence of gangs is a "bad" thing and that it should stop.
I suspect that there are political shannigans with regards to the inference that's being made.
The Patriot act is bad legislation. That however, does not give reason to NOT classify gang members as terrorists. They are terrorists. Plain and simple. And yes, as Booker so simply stated in his editorial, if that means that mothers and fathers need to look inward and wonder what part they played in raising a gang member, then they need to do so.
