No candidate is perfect, but at least with Peter what you see is what you get. KEN BRADLEY WRITES: While I commend Peter for his work on light rail, many elected officials, citizens, organizations helped to make it a reality, including groups Commissioner McLaughlin openly opposed. The Park and River Alliance in the mid 90's was a citizen group that had a lawsuit against the Hwy 55 project because the state, city, and county were planning to move forward with the project as a "high speed bus corridor", rather then LRT. The original Environmental Impact Statement was written based on LRT not high speed bus corridor. So the project would have broken federal law. The project was going to go down in flames and McLaughlin then went to Congressman Sabo and urged him to help find the funding for LRT. Good use of a political moment, but Peter publicly ridiculed the same people that brought the law suite. The citizens have never been given any credit, and they raised the money to make LRT a reality. Citizens had to fight for LRT to make it a reality. What you see is often what the politician wants you to see. Peter has done a good job of taking the majority of the credit, and deserves some, but people should know while he took advantage of the moment, citizens that raised dollars to fight the legal battle for LRT were ridiculed by him as well.
