Editorial: Arthur Naftalin/A farsighted Minnesota leader
May 19, 2005 ED0519A

The old core of DFL founders grew thinner Monday with the death of
Arthur Naftalin. For the many Minnesotans touched by the work of the
former Minneapolis mayor and his colleagues, this is a time of
sadness but also of hope; their legacy lives on.

Art Naftalin's name is on the honor role of the state's, and the
nation's, liberal leaders: the late Hubert Humphrey and Orville
Freeman among them, along with the decade-younger Walter Mondale and
Don Fraser. Naftalin's closest association was with Humphrey -- first
as aide to Humphrey the Minneapolis mayor in the 1940s, later to
Humphrey the U.S. senator. In the early 1950s he was Gov. Freeman's
commissioner of administration. Through eight years of the 1960s,
Naftalin was mayor of Minneapolis. Journalist, professor, politician,
he never lost his enthusiasm for public affairs.
...

Few political leaders can speak with passion about principles they
hold dear while keeping a twinkle in their eyes. Art Naftalin was one
of them. There were giants in the Earth in those days.
