Subject: Re: [Mpls] Accessory Units - Legalize them

There are two signs that dot our neighborhoods right down...a red 14"x 18" sign and a red 12"x14" sign, both say the same thing.. *FOR RENT* with sprawled hand written phone numbers. In case someone has not noticed, I do believe there is a glut of housing
available.

The accessory units that I have seen are never of code. Someone lives in the main home and rents out to family or friend not caring about receiving a rental credit because of low rent, while the owner does not maintain the property or claim the extra cash. When in college, a lot of students rented out over in the Kenwood area...the deals were great and the place usually unique. I have lived in three accessory units...one as a child in Hibbing, where everyone had a unit over their single garage out of necessity. Two in college, where the extra income for the owner was surely pin money and even tho they lived on premise...the property was not
maintained as it should have been except for the exterior.

I would assume some of the reasons they have been outlawed would be 1> Owners not claiming revenue 2> Code violations 3>No control on occupancy 4>Too much coverage of lot. 5> FIRE 6> Taxation Surely on the net, some answers might be there other than my speculation.

In the past year or so, having rental property has really changed and not for the better. My occupants have all been really great but now they are buying homes and moving on ...as they should be. Unless, there was enough staff for regular inspections(doubtful) ..and codes followed to the letter (doubtful)..doesn't make sense
to me. We need to do a better job on the housing that is already available without adding to the
influx seen in the past year.
