AD: "Cause it ain't about the money, but about a quality of life that was threatened by overbuilding, overdeveloping."
TI: The focus of the conversation was not on overbuilding or overbuilding in Uptown. It seemed that most supported the project except the height aspect. I agree, money isn't everything, but if you have a project that generally everyone supports but the height...and you have a split opinion out in the public, and you have many organizations that worked closely with the developer, then perhaps it is unwise to say "no" to the project due to the height simply because SOME of your constituants are opposed to the height! DG: "Wanting an overall plan that would encompass...infrastructure, services, design, safety, environment, along with proper zoning, which will allow our city to grow in density without creating tall legacies... does not mean a closed mind." TI: Having and wanting a plan is important, I agree. If the city is going to say "no" to projects in an area because there needs to be a plan, then they should put up a moratorium. And to say a plan is needed in Uptown before this project could have been approved with its current height is absurd. This developer has pretty good in being transparent, and has come out to the community and did four months of, usually good, meetings. In addition, citizens from other neighborhoods were invited to the host-neighborhood for their meetings. And while everyone seems to be freaking out about other development projects in the pipeline, the Lagoon Project was really the only one being discussed at that time...Calhoun Square really hadn't done that much and the Walker Library Task Force has now delayed everything. Planning should and can be done, but long discussions were had about the Lagoon Project...and by rejecting the project because a plan is needed sort of says "screw you" to all those people who spent hours and hours and hours on this project.
