Annie is correct there is no "legal" deadline for yard signs. And there
cannot be a deadline (or in this case birthline) as long as a person is
putting a sign which they personally own upon their own property. One is
allowed to decorate their own yard in a manner that is of their own
choosing, regardless of that pack at the Supreme Court who has decided that
it can make new laws about property rights.
As for people hating you for the yard sign, someone needs to get a life.
Though I hate pink flamingoes, I do not advocate a law against them. Though
I detest some of the elaborate Christmas decorations that cause light
pollution to surrounding neighborhoods I do NOT hate the people who do them.
I detest some architecture, those abominations posing as art institutions
spring to mind, but I do not "Hate" the university, the Walker, the
Institute, or even who ever created that eyesore off the new library(though
it may come close). So perhaps hate is a little strong for us to care
about.
I probably do feel some mild irritation at those who kept their Kerry and
Bush signs up after the election, or those who used to keep their Wellstone
and Reagan signs up as a badge of political orthodoxy long after either
could run for office. But hey, that was how those people wanted to decorate
their houses and yards, and apparently those signs indicated a central part
of their own identities and who they felt themselves to really be. While
both were an eye sore to me, I like people feeling good about themselves so
if it puts a smile on their face I love them.
For my own part I will display the sign of my choice, on my property,
regardless of what some politician thinks, (even the candidate whose sign it
is for). And I am willing to go to court about it. And if I am harassed by
public servant toddies then I guess I am willing to plead for relief from a
court of law and ask for punitive damages because of political harassment.
So perhaps I will have a huge sign painted at my own expense and placed in
my yard. Then wait to be harassed so I can take it to court. If the
University can get away with that eye sore of giant wadded up tinfoil
without political harassment, then it would certainly be discrimination for
the City to bother me about an 4X8 foot piece of yard art that I think is
beautiful.
