i'm happy to see that the council has voted to approve the lagoon project,
but not so sure about the compromise. is 9/10 really all that different
from 12/13 floors? was the motivation behind the compromise vote motivated
by the upcoming election (the "smart growth" mantra that doesn't, in my
opinion, mean anything - who isn't for "smart" growth?)
today's strib editorial on the lagoon project (and the light rail) was dead
on, i think - what message are we sending to developers by playing hardball
with a great project in a great spot? and how is a "stunning" design, as
they put it, going to be an eyesore?
we have a window right now where developers want to create housing, and new
businesses want to open shop, in minneapolis. housing and jobs - two
things i'd think we'd want to attract to growing areas like the retail
heart of uptown.
i was happy to see the green/progressive candidates voting for the
project. dean zimmerman, i believe, has developed positively as a
councilperson (outside of the ballpark debate, i believe).
thanks for reading,
