Councilmember Samuels did not "abandon his seat to challenge the only other minority member on the council." If you really are consumed by the contest, then you probably should have known that Councilmember Samuels had his seat bumped out from beneath him by a redistricting process that somehow managed to throw two incumbent Green Party councilmembers into districts where a popular DFL incumbent also resides. For Councilmember Samuels not to challenge Councilmember Johnson Lee, he would have to move out of his home into another neighborhood, or simply not run for a second term. Those seemingly untenable options are also available to Councilmember Johnson Lee, of course.
