Okay, I'll bite, if only to assure the people for whom "race" is a constant, and often unwelcome, factor in their existence that some of us do acknowledge what they endure. There is as much or more scientific evidence that "race" exists as there is that love or hate or God exists, the point being that, like those other three examples, it is a pervasive element in our society, inextricably bound up in our heritage, history and self-identity(ies). It would certainly be wonderful if simply denying it exists, or reducing it to a "joke," eliminated the corrosive impact it frequently exerts. I daresay most of those who are "owning" (and what a terribly ironic choice of word that was) the "joke," no matter how hard they try, don't have that luxury.
