Thank you for speaking up. I wish I had done it long ago. When one looks at the 'amenities' provided at Nicollet Island Park, there are remarkably few considering the size of the park. Even the tennis courts are not publicized, although the drinking fountain is. Nicollet Island is a beautiful, underutilized and little known treasure belonging to ALL the people in Minneapolis, not just the 200 residents who have move there within the past 20 years or so. The only tenant I know of that has been there longer is De Lasalle Highschool. They have served this city and the children in it well for over 100 years. It is sad to see them demonized by a few who don't want their peace and quiet disturbed by the sound of kids cheering for their favorite team.
I think the stadium would be a boon to the area and to the park system. The fact that D' is also offering to open it's gym up to the community is an added bonus. This is more than the Mpls Public Schools is often willing to do. The project is for the kids, not some retaurant owner or home owner. The people who live on Nicollet Island are some of the luckiest people in Minneapolis. I know they have worked hard on their homes, but so have many of us. The fact is they live on Park property and they need to share their bounty with all the other owners of the Island. Anne McCandless Jordan REMINDERS: 1. Be civil!
