The rules of the list are that if you want to get personal, take it
off list. Consider it part of being a poster.
This isn't in the rules! No personal stuff is allowed on the list,
but that doesn't imply people should be personal or abusive off the
list. If someone is abusive or rude, filter their mail into the Trash
file — life is too short.
There's a certain kind of offlist conversation that can be fruitful —
one-on-one discussions of specific, but not listwide interest, or
discussions about stuff that goes beyond the city's borders, or just
clearing up misunderstandings.
Again, though, no one deserves to be abused for their onlist ideas,
and while you can't stop jerks, you can trash their abuse and learn
to blow them off. I hope.
