While I am not sure I agree with all of Ms. Smart's ideas for Library funding, I do appreciate the fact that she is floating some ideas out there to consider. Let's hear from some of the other candidates too. Also I would encourage anyone to consider consolidation with Hennepin County as well as a selective library closing here or there.
There are several reasons NOT to consolidate with Hennepin County.

   * HCL is governed by the county board, MPL by its own board.
Reorganizing governance is not an easy thing to do. That it could
be done fairly is highly doubtful. MPL would stand to lose if
     there is consolidation.
   * HCL is a popular library; MPL is both popular library and research
library. Since the popular library is used most, research would
     stand to suffer.
   * The culture of HCL and the culture of MPL are two very different
things. It would not be easy to blend the two equably.

I'd like to see a library board that is interested in all of the MPL branches, not just central. I'd like to see a board which is ready to change the staff culture of management and knows how to do it. I would like to see a board that would not centralize, supposedly to save money (right!), and not homogenize every branch into a bland sameness which serves none well.
