Actually, if you swim to the east, you might make it, but west is a longer pull 
and you would be swept over the Falls and die - so don't try it.
 
I am reminded of the Park Board's early 1990's master planning process for the 
Island.  The highly paid outside consultant saw a survey that there was not 
much canoe use on the river around the Island and an early draft of the plan 
actually had a canoe dock off of Main Street across from the south tip of the 
Island.  When the residents on the CITIZEN'S ADVISORY COMMITTEE pointed out 
that low canoe utilization might have something to do with the fact that the 
Island was yards above St. Anthony Falls, the largest drop on the Mississippi 
River, the dock was cut from the next draft of the plan.  So maybe there is 
value to actually following the law and going through the process...
