I've enjoyed reading Fred Markus' posts on Nicollet Island's history and reviewed his other stories in the archives... he makes the history, the people, the politics, and the many stories of life on the Island so strong, so evocative....
Fred you gotta write a book about it!....there is a reason all this is coming to the surface and making itself heard. Others have written about the island, now YOU must. Steve Trimble's history of Loring Park, "In the Shadow of the City..." was published in 1990 but written in the 1980s and funded abundantly by many sources. Such funding probably no longer exists... but if authors such as Thatcher and Cedar Imboden can get their history of Uptown published...there still is a way to publish a neighborhood history. Earlier today - (when their website was working) I found a press release about a workshop being held this Saturday August 6 at the Edina historical society, "Sharing Our Local Histories." Many reps from Minneapolis neighborhoods will be there...and JoEllen Haugo of MPL's Special Collections is involved. 612-928-4577 or 612-630-6353. Registration has closed, but if people are willing to brown bag it for lunch, they might let you in. http://www.nrp.org/R2/News/NewsArch/2005/20050715.html I'd like to see history books about Elliot Park, Phillips, Lake Street, Kingfield, etc. Madeline Douglass Kingfield REMINDERS: 1.
