I was recently told that Gary Schiff's endorsement of Jeff Hayden for
Council from the 8th Ward just means that Hayden is allied with Schiff's

coalitions (unlike the Park Board, which has the ongoing 5-4 split). Can
someone with more knowledge of the Council give a feel for its internal
politics? Who is normally allied with whom? Over what issues? And is
there really a Gary Schiff coalition?

Clearly that's what it is. That's the problem with Gary not having a strong opponent challenging him - it gives him time to mess in other council races.

This could work against Hayden - because Hayden will need to demonstrate some independence from Gary Schiff.

When Dean Kallenbeck (sp???) was running for the 6th ward, the thing that hurt him the most was being perceived as Rick Stafford's sock puppet.

Marie Hauser has a similar problem with her record on the Park Board - she has the reputation of being a reliable follower of the so-called "five" - rather than a leader in her own right. Her major support is Unions....

I'm not sure what issues there are - except Gary wanting more say on the city council.
