I think a major problem with long quotes is when the poster has all the preceding messages at the top of the post and posts his/her comments _at the end_ of the post. One then has to wade through a number of lines to get to that post's message.

"Top responding" (or "bottom quoting") might be the best compromise to both points of view. That way, Ray can read what's new and zoom past all the old stuff (which will be at the end). Dean can then read the background to better understand what's being written in the last iteration.

What irks me is when the response is one line and the preceding posts (quoted in their entirety) are multiple lines ... and could easily be snipped.

No, it doesn't irk me that others leave the original message attached. It
irks me when writers delete the original message. I receive lots more
messages every day than I can conceivably read and deal with. If the
original message is not left attached, then I need to go hunting for the original so that I know what is being talked about. That is a very time consuming task. If the original is attached and I have already read it, I
just don't re-read it--that is not a problem.

I don't know if this irks anybody else, but some of the messages on this forum get rather long, especially when the poster is copying two or three
previous messages to their "pearls of wisdom."

Some of the folks who regularly post unexpurgated messages here need a
regular reminder that others of us don't need to read the same message two
or three times.
