Mark Snyder writes: It would appear that the STOP program is the very kind of proactive/preventive policing that folks have been crying out for?
RL: This looks kinda like a question, so I'll venture an answer. To be successful, crime prevention initiatives need to directly and actively involve the community. This is not just theory to me. I live in the area formerly known as "Crack Alley". Though HUGE improvements have been made, street crime is still a daily reality to my neighbors and me. And it's getting worse. In the Crack Alley days, we in the community were successful because we were supported by the police and through CCP/SAFE. We were empowered to organize with our neighbors, small and large businesses, community organizations and others to work together to prevent crimes. The power of organizing is the exponential expression of the power of one. We are stronger working together. Though STOP is a creative use of existing policing tools, it is not the "...preventive policing that folks have been crying out for..." The missing component is the community itself. Let's acknowledge that those of us working in City Hall don't have all the answers. Let's recognize that the people of our city's communities are our greatest allies in crime prevention. Let's work together to support and empower these communities. Peace, Robert Lilligren Council Member Ward 8 Candidate Ward 6 Phillips West www.voterobert.com REMINDERS: 1. Be civil!
