I'm rather skeptical of the prediction that we'd get to vote if the Twins
move or not, but we're not being allowed to vote (so far) about the funding
of a new stadium----- and that's a state law!
As usual, CO offers a pretty and rosy picture of what it would be like with
community ownership of the Twins. We got a contingent of library supporters
that finds it reprehensible to sell naming rights for the library and would
rather raise taxes, yet we'll put our tax money into buying a professional
baseball team, just so they don't leave? (Now, if I'm wrong about a
difference between "community ownership" and "public ownership," please
correct me. However, I'm starting to smell the idea of tax dollars going
into buying a ball team. Yuk.)
Maybe I'm missing something, but is this another "need" or a "want"? And
where does this fall on the priority list of everything that we don't have
enough money for?

Subject: [Mpls] Community Ownership of the Twins
Just wanted to put my same old two cents in here
about the positive aspects of Community Ownership
of the Twins........the issue came up again, because
apparently there was a debate on the stadium within
the Green Party, and some list members took issue
with the question of whether folks should oppose a
new stadium in any scenario, or whether it is OK to
support a new stadium if we also have community
ownership of the Twins.
So, I just wanted to clarify that we supporters of
Community Ownership believe that it's a good thing
for Minneapolis, and for Minnesota, regardless of how
the big stadium debate comes out. One big reason
for that is that "CO" keeps the team here.......if we
have it, they cannot move the team elsewhere!
The "CO" bill, sponsored by Sen. Ellen Anderson
and Rep. Phyllis Kahn, provides that before the team
could be moved out of state, the shareholders get
to vote on it first....and with many, many thousands
of local shareholders, we know they will vote no!
It seems to me that worst possible scenario would
be if we built the stadium and then later the owners
tried to move the team out of state. That's why
many CO supporters say we should pass community
ownership first, and THEN deal with the stadium.

P.S.: Just to be clear, I am NOT wading into
the debate about the inner workings of the
Green Party, something I know nothing about!
That's just how the CO issue was raised again.
