Here are my endorsements:
- Minneapolis DFL
- Minneapolis Central Labor Union, AFL-CIO , etc.
These endorsements are more or less meaningless after the initial stages
of the campaign. Their value, IMO, is that it's good to know that
someone(s) more than your mother and best friend support your candidacy,
but beyond that, nada, so far as the public should be concerned. To the
candidate, DFL or other party support means help with campaign
literature production and delivery. The unions help with that and sign
delivery in some instances. But that is help for the candidate and the
party, not the public.
Library unions' endorsement means something. They, at least, have a
vested interest in who governs their work lives. But, from my own
experience as a candidate the last go round, the other people you seek
endorsement from have only a sort of "we always do this" feel. I
distinctly remember seeking the endorsement from committees (sometimes
only two or three people at the most) I was willing to bet had not
stepped foot inside the library in the last two decades or even longer.
One or two members of some of these committees I would swear had not
even read a book since high school. Though these committees purported to
represent a constituency, I knew from my own experience as a unionized
employee that the membership was not even asked it's opinion on these
matters.
It is important, however, to be able to stand up in front of a group
and, in 90 seconds, be able to capture the interest of an audience, lay
out one's plans clearly, and show some knowledge of the issues which
affect the public.
In terms of the last library forum, very few were able to do that. Of
those who could, some were clear, but their ideas would not stand the
test of the doable. Others, frankly, were so dull and plodding that it
was impossible to accord them the ability to be of much help to the
board. Still others were so disorganized that it would be unfair to the
board to saddle them with such a one.
I'm looking forward to tomorrow's forum at Walker. I have more questions
and I like to double check my thinking.
