To Mayor's Staff and Council/Committee Members, I am writing because I will not be able to attend the Committee meeting on 8/23/05. But I would like my opinion and voice heard. I am writing you all about the Discussion on subject number 22 titles Block Event Denial Appeal:
Uphold denial of a Business District Block Event application by Mercado Central to be held on September 15, 2005, based on event restrictions as stated in the Minneapolis Code of Ordinances Chapter 455.35, Block Events, Application Process. My family and I whom consist of native mexicanos and thousands of other Mexican heritage persons living in Minneapolis would find a disservice and would be diappointed if the Block Club Permit was denied. I am shocked that with the significance of September 15 to the Mexican Culture especially or the Hispanic Culture as a whole this would be even considered to be denied. It would also show a disrespect to the Hispanic Community. September 15th is an extemely important cultural observance for the Mexican Community for their independence. I read the letter from Ricardo Cervantes to the Cooperative Mercado Central. It was denied becuase of not being in compliance with the requirements of City Ordinance 455.35. But later on in the paragraph is states " Your application can be denied under the authority of city ordinance 455.30 (a), which states that a block event permit may be denied if “the application does not comply with applicable requirements of this chapter”. It states that it "can be denied" and not "Must be denied". This event is only scheduled to last till 1130 pm and it is an integral part of the Celebration with the live simulcast with Mexico City of this celebration. Show the Mexican Community that you respect their Culture and show them you respect all the hard work they do for our Community. Although I have to be at work at 6 am September 16, I would be at this event with My Family. My boys are recent immigrants from Puebla , outside of Mexico City and they would be extremely disppointed if this event was canceled because of being denied a permit.
