Most of the graffiti in my neighborhood during the past 14 years has NOT been gang graffiti. I won't say that there isn't gang graffiti, only that it doesn't represent a big percentage of it.
Most of the graffiti in my neighborhood is done by white kids who live primarily in the suburbs according the police experts I talk to about this issue. Must get boring in Edina or Eden Prairie so they take Dad's Beemer and drive in the city to deface our space. What I do know is that you have to deal with the graffiti in 24 hours to send a message that it won't be tolerated here and we will get rid of it. Planting thorny shrubs or vines is a deterrent to graffiti.(I would recommend removing any graffiti that is there before planting something however) It's the large bare surfaces on buildings that provide the biggest temptation.
