The reason Minneapolis Police went to New Orleans is the same reason most of us, I hope, have donated to the Red Cross, Salvation Army or some other charitable organiztion which is trying to help in this disaster. We are our brothers keepers. A dozen officers won't make a huge difference here, but together with officers from other departments, the New Orleans police officers who did stay and work their butts off for a week without relief will now be able to get some rest and find out how their own families are doing. Mpls isn't the only department detailing officers to help. Whether it's helping St Paul, St Louis or New Orleans doesn't matter. Their help is needed and I cannot believe any officer went there against his or her will. This is not a feel good gesture.
By the way, the federal troops can only assist in aid and are, by law, not allowed to enforce local law or shoot except in self-defense. Over half of Louisiana's National Guard troops, who can enforce local laws, are overseas. I doubt that many of those left are trained law enforcement officers. Would you wish another Kent State on the people of New Orleans on top of all they have already suffered. I strongly suggest that this not become a campaign issue. It will only make those who try to do so look very small and mean spirited. Anne McCandless Jordan REMINDERS: 1. Be civil! Please read the NEW RULES at http://www.e-democracy.org/rules.
